History

Shafter Lake Cemetery is the last significant remnant of the ghost town of Shafter Lake, platted in August 1907 on the north shore of a lake named for army officer William R. Shafter. The boomtown reached about 500 residents by 1910, with a bank, churches, hotels, and a school, but it lost a bitter county-seat contest to nearby Andrews and was ravaged by a smallpox epidemic in 1910-11. As the town emptied, most families disinterred and moved their dead to Andrews, leaving only about a dozen graves at the cemetery on the south side of the lake.
