History

The Museum of East Texas grew from the burned-out shell of a 1906 church that six local women envisioned as a cultural center; the city granted them the site in 1974, and the 'Lufkin Historic and Creative Arts Center' opened in 1976. It was renamed the Museum of East Texas in 1985 and expanded through 1990 to about 21,000 square feet. It displays works by East Texas artists alongside American, Latin American, and European pieces, with free admission.
