History

The Fulton Mansion, a Second Empire showplace on Aransas Bay, was built from 1874 to 1877 for George W. Fulton, whose Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company built a fortune shipping cattle tallow and hides. Unusually advanced for its region, it had central heating, gas lighting, and indoor plumbing. The state purchased the site in 1976 and opened the restored home as a museum; operation transferred from Texas Parks and Wildlife to the Texas Historical Commission in 2008.
