History

The Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport grew out of the late-1970s Rockport Seafair festival and opened in 1989; the Legislature had designated it the Official Maritime Museum of Texas in 1987. It earned accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in 2005 and expanded in 2012. Exhibits focus on offshore oil and gas, Texas seaports, early Gulf exploration, and the seafood industry, and include artifacts from the excavation of the French shipwreck La Belle.
