History

Pilgrims Rest Cemetery near Bellville in Austin County was established in 1861, the year of its oldest tombstone, marking the grave of Eduard Roensch. The first cemetery land, two acres purchased from William Graf, was deeded in 1881 to trustees J. Harloff, O. Sander, and F. Drop, reflecting the German settlement of the surrounding area. The Texas Historical Commission designated it a Historic Texas Cemetery and placed a marker there in 2006.
