History

Wellhausen Cemetery is one of the small historic burial grounds in the Cat Spring area of western Austin County. Cat Spring was established in 1834 by German immigrants from Oldenburg and Westphalia led by the von Roeder and Kleberg families, making it one of the earliest German settlements in Texas and, from the 1850s, a gateway for Czech immigration into the region. The cemetery's German family name reflects those north-European settler roots.
