History

The Czech Cemetery near Nelsonville served the Bohemian and Moravian families who made this west-central Austin County community the largest concentration of Czech-speaking settlers in the county. Czech immigrants began arriving in large numbers in the late 1860s and 1870s, using nearby Cat Spring as a dispersal point before buying up farmland around Nelsonville, and a local Czech-Moravian Brethren congregation was organized in 1893. The burial ground stands among the Czech community landmarks of the Mill Creek area.
