History

Established in 1952 to preserve materials relating to Stephen F. Austin's 'Little Colony,' Bastrop County, and the city of Bastrop, the museum sits on a lot purchased in 1850 by John Cornelson. Now the Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center, it is an official interpretive partner of the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Exhibits cover the Camino Real, the Texas Revolution, coal mining, the catastrophic 2011 wildfires, and Bastrop native governor Joseph D. Sayers.
