History

This family cemetery northeast of Elgin sits on part of the original land grant of Thomas Christian, an early Bastrop County settler and the first husband of pioneer Mary Randolph Buchanan Christian Burleson. Born in Virginia in 1795, Mary crossed the frontier from Kentucky to Illinois and finally to Texas, married Captain James Burleson after Thomas Christian's death, and was buried on the Christian league when she died in 1870. The site is also known by the names Smith, Tisdale and Christian Family Cemetery.
