History

This cemetery is tied to the Butler Brick Company, the brickmaking operation an Irish immigrant bricklayer, Michael Butler, established in 1873 after fine clay pits were found near the rail line in Bastrop County. The works grew into a company town of brick worker housing and a company store on a large tract near McDade, and the cemetery holds the workers and families of that industrial community. The firm later became the Elgin-Butler Brick Company and remained family-owned until 2005.
