History

San Antonio hardware merchant Albert Praeger built this Romanesque Revival commercial block on the northwest corner of the Beeville courthouse square in 1906 to house his hardware business. It is considered the best surviving example of early-twentieth-century commercial architecture in Beeville, distinguished by round-arched second-floor windows, polychromatic brickwork, and a wrap-around awning carried on Ionic columns. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, it reopened in 2002 as the restored Joe Barnhart Bee County Library.
