History
This house at 400 North Pearl Street in Belton was the home of Martha White McWhirter (1827-1904) and her husband, attorney and farmer George McWhirter. Martha founded and led the Woman's Commonwealth, also known as the Belton Sanctificationists or Sisters of Sanctification, a women's religious commune established in the late 1870s that sheltered women and children, many fleeing abusive homes. The economically successful group ran boarding houses, two hotels, and farms. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
