History

The Kyle Hotel, a thirteen-story skyscraper in downtown Temple, opened January 21, 1929, spurred by the growth of nearby Scott & White Hospital. Designed by Austin architect George Louis Walling in a blend of Mediterranean and Pueblo Revival styles, the roughly $500,000 hotel was managed by the prestigious Baker chain and featured a coffee shop, barbershop, beauty salon, and roof garden. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, and in 1991 it was renovated into housing for elderly, disabled, and low-income residents.
