History
Shiloh Cemetery near Troy in Bell County has served area settlers since the mid-1800s, its earliest marked graves those of Ema P. and Laban Gray from 1859. It was tied to a church organized by the mid-1850s and a school; Joanna Scott deeded the property to the community for burial, religious, and educational use in 1871. Among those buried here is Franz Joseph Moritz Maedgen (1830–1898), a German-born Civil War veteran elected to the Texas House in 1878; descendants formed the Troy Shiloh Cemetery Association in 1967, and the marker was placed in 2007.
