Texas A&M University–Central Texas

Higher education beyond the two-year level in Killeen began with American Technological University, a private upper-division school opened in 1973 that was renamed the University of Central Texas in 1989. A Central Texas University Task Force formed in 1995 proposed that the private UCT close and hand its holdings to the state, with Tarleton State University offering upper-level and graduate courses in Killeen instead; that branch opened as Tarleton State University–Central Texas in 1999. Governor Rick Perry signed legislation on May 27, 2009, creating Texas A&M University–Central Texas as a stand-alone member of the Texas A&M University System, and the Army transferred several hundred acres of Fort Hood land for a permanent campus. Founder's Hall, the first permanent building, opened in May 2012, followed by the larger Warrior Hall with its library. The university still enrolls transfer students at the junior, senior and graduate levels, and many of them are active-duty soldiers, veterans or military family members from the nearby post.
