History

Founded in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo was one of Spain's early Texas missions before it was secularized in 1793 and later used as a fortress by a military company that likely gave it the name "Alamo." It is best known for the Battle of the Alamo (February 23 to March 6, 1836), when a small Texian garrison including James Bowie, William B. Travis and David Crockett fell to Santa Anna's army after a thirteen-day siege. The rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" spurred the Texian victory weeks later that secured independence for the Republic of Texas.
