History
The Altgelt-Isbell House at 226 King William Street was built in 1878 for Ernst Hermann Altgelt, the attorney and businessman who founded San Antonio's King William neighborhood and named its main avenue for Kaiser Wilhelm I. The limestone house shows restrained Victorian design with Italianate touches, sixteen-inch-thick walls, a two-story gallery and tall arched windows. Later owners included the Schleuning family and, in 1944, the Isbells, who added the limestone wall.
