History

Manvel Cemetery serves the city of Manvel in northern Brazoria County, a community that grew from farms settled along Chocolate Bayou in the 1850s and took shape as a town after the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad reached the area around 1879. The settlement was renamed Manvel in honor of Allen Manvel, a president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and a formal townsite was laid out in 1890. The community later became a productive oil field after a 1931 strike.
