History

Oakland Cemetery lies in the vicinity of the old Oakland community on the Gulf Prairie of southern Brazoria County, west of the Brazos River near Freeport. The settlement took its name from Oakland, the cotton-and-sugar plantation established by Henry William Munson, who came to the county in 1828 and bought land from Stephen F. Austin; the plantation kept operating after his death in 1833. By the twentieth century little of the community remained but St. Joseph Church, an adjacent cemetery, and scattered dwellings.
