History

This cemetery marks burials connected to the Waldeck Plantation, a large Brazoria County sugar plantation located three to four miles from present-day West Columbia. By 1860 owner Hamblin Bass held 213 enslaved people working the plantation's roughly 1,450 acres, and Waldeck is credited by one account as the first sugar refinery in Texas. The Providence Baptist Church, later moved to the nearby Chenango Plantation in 1864, had its origins among the Waldeck community.
