History

Mims Community Cemetery sits on the former Fannin-Mims plantation lands near Brazoria and is a historically African American burial ground, with many of those interred descended from people enslaved on the Mims and Fannin plantations. The community takes its name from planter Joseph Mims. The cemetery is associated with Zion Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church on FM 521, and its earliest documented burial is that of Wharton H. Bowers Sr. in 1919. The surrounding Mims community revived its Juneteenth remembrance in 1983.
