History

This African American cemetery lies at Sweeny in southwestern Brazoria County, a town that grew from the plantation of John Sweeny, who arrived from Tennessee with his family in 1833. The burial ground served the Black community of the Sweeny area, whose roots reach back to the enslaved and freed people of the surrounding plantation country.
