History

Brazosport-area voters first approved a junior college district in 1948, but the college was not built until voters authorized a maintenance tax in 1967. Brazosport Junior College opened in the fall of 1968 with 868 students taking classes at the Brazosport Education Extension Center in Freeport under first president J. R. Jackson, and a bond issue paid for a permanent campus built largely under one roof on 156 wooded acres in Lake Jackson near Oyster Creek. The school graduated its first 25 students and became Brazosport College in 1970. It earned accreditation to award bachelor's degrees in December 2004 and began offering a Bachelor of Applied Technology in 2005, the same year it opened The Clarion, a 600-seat music performance hall.
