History

Opened to the public in 2006, the Brazos Valley African American Museum was the vision of retired educator Mell Pruitt and is the first institution devoted to promoting the history of African Americans in the Brazos Valley. It stands in Bryan's historic Freedman Town on a site associated with the 1885 Bryan School for Colored Youth and the later Washington Elementary. The museum serves as a repository of artifacts, oral histories and records, and celebrates Black History Month and Juneteenth each year.
