History

The Silverton Cemetery serves the town of Silverton, seat of Briscoe County, which was founded in 1891 by Thomas J. Braidfoot and associates who had come from Della Plain in Floyd County. The name, suggested by Braidfoot's wife, is said to reflect the silvery shimmer of the area's shallow lakes; Silverton was chosen county seat in an 1892 election, beating rival townsites Linguish and Tarlton. The cemetery's recorded burials span from 1892 into the present.
