History

The Brown County Museum of History in Brownwood offers a dual-building experience, pairing a main exhibit hall with guided tours of the Old County Jail across the street. Built in 1902 by English stonemason William F. Morton in a modified feudal style, the four-story jail served until 1981; its former sheriff's residence now interprets Texas rule of law, with three floors of iron cells above. Exhibits also cover pioneer life and the WWII-era Camp Bowie.
