History

Cross Cut Cemetery is the enduring feature of the old Cross Cut community in northern Brown County, whose first store opened in 1878. The roughly two-acre burial ground is believed to have been donated by Mark and Sarah Pentecost; after oil was found in the 'Cross Cut sand' in 1923 the town briefly boomed, but by 1940 the cemetery held more people than the living town. A cemetery association was formed in 1976, and interments span veterans from the Civil War to Vietnam.
