History
Lewis L. Chiles (1811-1864) was a Virginia-born veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto and founder of Caldwell. He had operated a trading post on Davidson Creek before the town was laid out along the Old San Antonio Road. His Texas Centennial grave marker, placed in 1936, stands in the old city cemetery at Caldwell.
