The Caldwell County Courthouse in Lockhart was built in 1893–1894 in the Second Empire style. The design is often attributed to Alfred Giles, though recent research indicates it was the work of Henry E. M. Guidon; it is nearly identical to the Goliad County courthouse, built from the same plans. The three-story building is faced in cream-colored limestone and red sandstone, with a central clock tower housing a four-faced Seth Thomas clock. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1976 and listed on the National Register in 1978 as a contributing property of the Caldwell County Courthouse Historic District; its exterior has appeared in the films What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Waiting for Guffman.
