History
The Calhoun County Museum in Port Lavaca was established in 1964 by the county commissioners' court, originally in the 1896 jail building before moving to its present site. Its exhibits cover the region's Native American history, including the Karankawa, and La Salle's ill-fated 1685 expedition, with artifacts recovered from his shipwreck La Belle. Other displays interpret the vanished port of Indianola, destroyed by an 1886 hurricane, and include a Fresnel lens that served the Matagorda Island lighthouse from 1873 to 1977.
