History

Sylvanus Hatch (1788-1885), born in Massachusetts and a member of the Mier Expedition, was an early settler of Calhoun County. After Texas independence he bought a league of land west of Lavaca and moved his family there in 1846, helping found the Chocolate community and building his home, Agua Dulce, along Chocolate Creek. He established the Hatch Cemetery in 1850 and, with his brother Joseph, donated land for St. Paul's-on-the-Prairie Episcopal Church.
