History

Indianola Cemetery holds the graves of residents of Indianola, one of Texas's leading 19th-century ports and immigration gateways. The earliest marked grave, that of child William Woodward, dates to 1852, when cholera and yellow fever swept the town; Confederate and Union soldiers who occupied Indianola during the Civil War are buried here, along with victims of the devastating 1875 and 1886 hurricanes that destroyed the town. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker in 1986.
