History

The Point Isabel (Port Isabel) Lighthouse is an 82-foot brick tower completed in 1852 to guide ships through the Brazos Santiago Pass into Port Isabel. It was extinguished in 1905 as maritime traffic declined, then donated to the State of Texas in 1950 by the Lon C. Hill Jr. family and opened to the public as a state historic site in 1952. It is the only one of sixteen historic Texas coastal lighthouses open to visitors, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
