Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park near Brownsville preserves the site of the May 8, 1846, Battle of Palo Alto, the first major clash of the Mexican-American War. Under Gen. Zachary Taylor, U.S. "flying artillery" repelled a larger force led by Gen. Mariano Arista, opening the way for the U.S. invasion of Mexico. It is the only National Park Service unit devoted to that war, and the park also includes the nearby Resaca de la Palma battlefield.
