History

Las Rucias Memorial Cemetery serves the colonia of Las Rusias in southwestern Cameron County, near U.S. 281 beside Sacred Heart Catholic Church about nine miles southwest of Harlingen. The community sits at a historically charged spot — a clash between U.S. and Mexican troops nearby on April 25, 1846, helped ignite the Mexican War, and a Civil War skirmish was fought there on June 25, 1864. The cemetery holds well over a thousand graves.
