History

The Douglassville Cemetery occupies land first settled in 1850 by Sulphur River ferryman Williamson Petty, whose claim was later purchased by Georgia native Col. John C. Douglass, for whom the town is named. Its earliest legible stone marks the 1859 grave of Henrietta Cook and her infant twins, and the burial ground was designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 1976.
