History
After an earlier courthouse burned, Chambers County built its present courthouse in Anahuac in 1936 at a cost of about $276,000, a Works Progress Administration project designed by Austin architect Cornell G. Curtis. The three-story ashlar limestone building is a fine example of PWA Moderne and Art Deco design, with allegorical relief panels symbolizing the sources of county wealth, chief among them oil, and Art Deco woodwork and chandeliers inside. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark.
