History

Mission Nuestra Senora de la Luz was established in 1756 near present Wallisville on the lower Trinity River, paired with the presidio San Agustin de Ahumada. Spanish authorities founded the outpost to counter French influence among the Orcoquiza and Bidai Indians. Beset by illness, poor supplies, and flooding, the mission won few converts and was abandoned in 1771.
