History

Martin Cemetery lies east of the old Atoy community in southern Cherokee County, reached from the Highway 69 and FM 343 junction south of Rusk. Among its 19th-century burials are the Reverend J. M. Martin (1841-1898) and his wife Mary, along with Confederate veteran E. Asbury Hatchett of Company K, 4th Texas Cavalry. Its graves range from the 1860s through the 20th century.
