History

The Selman-Roark Cemetery at Linwood, east of Alto, is regarded as perhaps the oldest Anglo-American graveyard in Cherokee County. Surveyor William Roark brought his family from Tennessee in 1834, and his mother Nancy and brother Napoleon were buried on the half-acre tract about 1837-38; the Durst family formally deeded the ground to Roark in 1838. It took its double name after Roark's daughter Elizabeth married Benjamin Franklin Selman in 1855, and the Texas Historical Commission placed a marker there in 1979.
