History

Providence Cemetery lies about five miles south of Jacksonville on FM 347 near Dialville and was established in 1884. By tradition it began when Mid Deason died and his widow chose a knoll visible from her porch for his grave, waving her bonnet to signal the men where to dig; Deason's 1884 burial is recognized as the cemetery's first. Administered by a volunteer board and financed by free-will offerings, it now holds well over a thousand graves.
