The seminary began in 1955, when the North American Baptist Association's education committee created North American Theological Seminary to prepare its ministers. Local supporters J. M. Travis and William S. Gober gave seventeen acres on the edge of Jacksonville, construction started in 1956, and the first 57 students arrived when classes opened in September 1957, with the chapel following a few months later. Over the next decades the campus added a library, a music hall, a student center and housing, and the school adopted the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary name in the late 1980s. Owned and operated by the Baptist Missionary Association of America, it now prepares pastors, missionaries and other church workers through programs ranging from an associate of divinity to the Master of Divinity.
