History
The Childress County Heritage Museum was chartered in 1976 as part of the nation's bicentennial and initially operated out of the old jail on the courthouse square. In 1981 the former U.S. Post Office building, a 1935 structure, was purchased and donated to house the collection, and the museum opened there in 1983, later receiving a Texas Historical Landmark designation in 1991. Its exhibits chronicle the history of Childress County, created in 1876 and named for George C. Childress, co-author of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
