History
Melissa Cemetery in Collin County grew from the burials of the pioneer Sherley (Shirley) family and was formally established in 1889; its oldest marked graves belong to William M. Sherley (1856) and Lewis Sherley (1867), reinterred here from a nearby farm. The cemetery holds veterans of conflicts from the Mexican War through World War II and remains the primary burial ground for the Melissa community. Its Texas historical marker was erected in 1989.
