History

This burial ground lies at Mentz, a German Catholic community in eastern Colorado County originally called New Mainz, settled largely by immigrants who came under the Mainzer Verein from villages near Bingen on the Rhine. It is associated with St. Roch's Catholic Church, named for a hilltop chapel near the settlers' homeland; the congregation built its stone church in 1871. Burials in the Mentz churchyard reach back to the early 1860s.
