History
The Guadalupe Hotel (also called the Schmitz Hotel) in New Braunfels began about 1851 as a one-story cedar-and-limestone structure and was acquired in 1858 by German immigrant Jacob Schmitz as a stagecoach inn. Schmitz added second and third floors in 1873, and the hotel is traditionally said to have hosted figures such as Sam Houston and Robert E. Lee. Acquired by the New Braunfels Conservation Society in 1969 and restored, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
