History

Kindermaskenball, German for 'children's masked ball,' is New Braunfels's oldest heritage tradition, begun in the mid-19th century by Hermann Seele, one of the German colony's first teachers, as a springtime celebration meant to connect local children with their German roots. Costumed youngsters gathered at the New Braunfels Academy and, led by a brass band, paraded through town to sing and perform. Still held each spring, it is considered the oldest children's festival and parade in the country and has been organized since 1992 by the Heritage Society of New Braunfels.
