History
The Comanche County Historical Museum in Comanche traces the county's history from frontier times to the mid-20th century. It was made possible when local attorney Joe Maxwell donated 3.2 acres and buildings to the historical society in 1975; volunteers spent three years cleaning the site and gathering memorabilia from communities across the county before the museum opened in October 1978. Grown to more than 14 rooms across some 50,000 square feet, its exhibits include a blacksmith shop, filling station, and a replica saloon interpreting the original Comanche saloon where gunslinger John Wesley Hardin killed a deputy in 1874, along with dinosaur tracks, antique automobiles, and war memorabilia.
