History

Oakwood Cemetery is the community burial ground of the city of Comanche and dates to the town's founding. In 1859 land developer Capt. John Duncan donated 200 acres for the county-seat townsite, setting aside ground for a graveyard, churches, and schools; the roughly 5.5-acre cemetery was named Oakwood for its stand of oak trees. Its earliest marked grave is that of one-year-old John Neely, who died in January 1861, and the grounds hold veterans of conflicts from the Republic of Texas era onward, including both Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers.
