History
Culberson County was created in 1911 with Van Horn as its seat, and in 1912 the commissioners awarded a courthouse contract to Fort Worth architect E. E. Churchill. Completed in 1914 at a cost of about $44,335, the building was clad in native red sandstone quarried in the hills northwest of town and detailed in a loosely Italian Renaissance manner, with hand-carved sandstone portico columns. That courthouse was demolished in 1967 and replaced by the county's current building.
